Valencia is celebrating a historic milestone this year: the 700th Anniversary of Corpus Christi, one of the city's oldest, most emblematic and spectacular festivals.
Popularly known as the Festa Grossa, this celebration began in 1326 and, seven centuries later, continues to fill the streets of the historic centre with culture, tradition, music and emotion. Declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest, Corpus Christi in Valencia offers a unique opportunity to discover the city's most authentic essence.
What is Corpus Christi in Valencia?
Corpus Christi is a religious celebration dedicated to the Eucharist, but in Valencia it has evolved into a unique cultural event that combines art, history, popular theatre and heritage.
For centuries, the streets of Ciutat Vella have been transformed into a grand stage where biblical characters, giants, traditional dances and the famous Rocas parade through the city, showcasing true jewels of Valencian heritage.
La Moma: the most beloved symbol of Corpus Christi
One of the most anticipated moments of the celebration is the appearance of La Moma, a character dressed in white who represents Virtue.
Accompanied by the seven Momos, who symbolise the seven deadly sins, she performs a traditional dance in which good triumphs over evil. This unique representation has become one of Valencia's most iconic images.
The Rocas: treasures with centuries of history
The Corpus Christi Rocas are impressive monumental floats that began parading in the 15th century.
In some cases exceeding ten metres in length, these historic structures depict religious scenes and form part of Valencia's cultural heritage. During the celebration they travel through the streets of the historic centre, offering a unique spectacle for visitors and residents alike.
